Frequently Asked Questions
Chroma is Canada's first and only financial app for renters. We're mostly known for our industry-leading ChromaRent product and helping you build your credit score by paying rent.
We exist to empower renters by making renting a more convenient, flexible and rewarding experience.
Do you like things you can "set and forget"? Then you're going to love paying rent with Chroma.
Here's how it works: once you're qualified, Chroma takes care of paying your rent to your landlord on the first of the month, and your repayments to us are automatically withdrawn from your bank account on your paydays.
No more cash-flow roller coaster, no more setting reminders to yourself, no more hassle.
For ChromaRent to be a good fit, your rent and other financial obligations need to be manageable relative to your (or your household's) income, and you should have a history of paying rent on time.
ChromaRent is not a great fit if you're behind on rent, have a lot of consumer debt or otherwise don't have enough room in your monthly budget to consistently meet your obligations on time.
We charge a flat subscription fee per month (see our home page for specifics), built into the payments you send us. No hidden fees, no extra interest. It's that simple.
Nope! Chroma is designed so you can use it without getting your landlord involved. All we need is your landlord's email address (you'll supply that during setup), and we'll send your rent payment to them every month by Interac e-Transfer.
We believe renters should have control over how they pay for their homes, so we're making it happen.
Chroma is perfect for renters who want to get their rent payment working in their favour: match the timing of rent with your paycheques and get credit for doing so.
The average renter pays close to $100,000 in rent over the course of their renting lives, imagine having that contribute to your credit score!
In Canada, your credit score determines whether or not you can get a loan and what interest rate you pay. Whether it's a car loan, a mortgage for a new home, or even if you're trying to rent an apartment, your credit score determines if you qualify.
Having your largest monthly expense contribute to your credit score can be a game-changer as you set yourself up for the future. Whether you're looking to buy a home in the future or not, an established credit score can open up great opportunities, while a weak credit score can hold you back.
Yes! Your payments through Chroma are reported to the credit bureau. The impact can vary depending on your existing credit history as well as other factors, but reporting successful rent payments every month will improve your credit score over time.
Wherever you go, Chroma goes with you.
When you move, you'll just log in to Chroma and set up your new rent payments (with your new landlord's email address), and that's it - things will keep working like they always have.
When you pay rent with Chroma, your payments are automatically tracked in your 'Chroma Passport' - a digital profile and renting history that you can share with future landlords to show them you're a responsible renter.
You'll save time and hassle, plus you'll stand out from the crowd, when applying to your next place.
There are dozens of organizations across the country that want to help renters succeed and housing affordability is top of mind for many Canadians. Chroma has partnered with several of these organizations to make your renting experience more affordable and rewarding.
